1.1. General

The UID contains the necessary circuitry for configuring Magna-Power Electronics power supplies for master/slave parallel or master/slave series operation:

  • Master/slave parallel operation allows two or more power supplies to be connected in parallel to obtain a total output current greater than that available from one power supply. The total output current is the sum of the output currents of the individual power supplies.

  • Master/slave series operation allows two or more power supplies to be connected in series to obtain a total output voltage greater than that available from one power supply. The total output voltage is the sum of the output voltages of the individual power supplies.

In either operating mode, the master unit commands the slave units to the proper voltage and current, and each power supply can be turned on or off separately. Each unit displays its own individual voltage and current.

Fig. 1.1 and Fig. 1.2 show the electrical circuits of the UID46 and UID47/UID53, respectively. Jumper JP1, accessible by removing the UID cover, configures the device for either master/slave parallel or master/slave series operation, as shown in Fig. 1.3 and Fig. 1.4. The following sections describe how to use the device for master/slave parallel and series operation; for custom applications, see Custom Configurations.

Caution

As shipped, the UID is configured for master/slave parallel operation.

Slave power supplies must be configured for external program (EXT PGM) input. The master unit can be configured for rotary, keypad, external program, or remote input. Refer to the power supply documentation for setting the configuration commands: magna-power.com/support.
