4.12. Electrical Checkout Procedure

This section describes the electrical checkout procedure for the DBx Module. This brief procedure validates the product’s power circuitry and safety features and should be performed upon receipt of the product and before it is placed into use.

Note

Complete the Electrical Check power-on self-test first. The Accessory must have initialized to its Standby status with the fans running before beginning this procedure.

Begin with the Accessory in Standby and no load connected. Using the front panel set-point selector buttons together with the digital encoder knob or 12-digit keypad, set the voltage, current, and power set-points to zero. Enter the menu system (Menu button, then Trip-Point Settings) and set the over voltage trip (OVT), over current trip (OCT), and over power trip (OPT) set-points to their maximum value, 110% of the product’s full scale rating. The open-circuit and short-circuit checks require only 50% of rated AC current; the loaded power checks at the end of this procedure require a resistive load and an AC source sized for the power level reached.

Maximum Voltage, Open-Circuit

With the output open, set the current set-point to the product’s full scale rating and press the Start button. The DC output enabled LED illuminates and the regulation-state LED indicates constant voltage (CV). Increase the voltage set-point with the digital encoder knob from minimum to maximum and back to minimum. The DC voltage should increase smoothly from minimum to maximum to minimum on the voltage display. Return the voltage set-point to zero and press the Stop button.

Over Voltage Trip, Open-Circuit

Enter the menu system (Menu button, then Trip-Point Settings, then OVT) and set the over voltage trip set-point to half the voltage rating of the product, then press Enter to save. Press the Start button and slowly increase the voltage set-point. Over voltage trip should operate at the OVT set-point: the Accessory transitions to a Soft Fault, the DC output is disabled, and the auxiliary display reads Voltage exceeded the trip point. Press CLEAR to resume. Press the Clear button to clear the fault. Return the OVT set-point to its maximum value (110% of full scale rating), start the Accessory again, and confirm that it operates normally.

Maximum Current, Short-Circuit

With the main AC power switch off using the black control power switch, connect a short across the output terminals of the Accessory. Restore AC power, set the voltage and current set-points to zero, and turn the control power switch on. With the output shorted, set the voltage set-point to the product’s full scale rating and press the Start button. The DC output enabled LED illuminates and the regulation-state LED indicates constant current (CC). Increase the current set-point with the digital encoder knob from minimum to maximum and back to minimum. The DC current should increase smoothly from minimum to maximum to minimum on the current display. Return the current set-point to zero and press the Stop button.

Over Current Trip, Short-Circuit

Enter the menu system (Menu button, then Trip-Point Settings, then OCT) and set the over current trip set-point to half the current rating of the product, then press Enter to save. Press the Start button and slowly increase the current set-point. Over current trip should operate at the OCT set-point: the Accessory transitions to a Soft Fault, the DC output is disabled, and the auxiliary display reads Current exceeded the trip point. Press CLEAR to resume. Press the Clear button to clear the fault. Return the OCT set-point to its maximum value (110% of full scale rating), start the Accessory again, and confirm that it operates normally.

Maximum Power, Loaded

With the main AC power switch off using the black control power switch, connect a resistive load across the output terminals capable of dissipating the product’s rated power within its voltage and current envelope. Restore AC power, set the voltage and current set-points to the product’s full scale ratings, set the power set-point to zero, and turn the control power switch on. Press the Start button. With the voltage and current set-points above the load’s demand, the Accessory regulates in constant power and the regulation-state LED indicates constant power (CP). Increase the power set-point with the digital encoder knob from minimum to maximum and back to minimum. The measured power (P) on the auxiliary display should increase smoothly from minimum to maximum to minimum. Return the power set-point to zero and press the Stop button.

Over Power Trip, Loaded

With the resistive load still connected, enter the menu system (Menu button, then Trip-Point Settings, then OPT) and set the over power trip set-point to half the power rating of the product, then press Enter to save. Press the Start button and slowly increase the power set-point. Over power trip should operate at the OPT set-point: the Accessory transitions to a Soft Fault, the DC output is disabled, and the auxiliary display reads Power exceeded the trip point. Press CLEAR to resume. Press the Clear button to clear the fault. Return the OPT set-point to its maximum value (110% of full scale rating), start the Accessory again, and confirm that it operates normally. Return all set-points to zero, press the Stop button, and disconnect the resistive load.

If any of these events do not occur, the Accessory is defective and should not be operated. Depending on the circumstances, either warranty service or troubleshooting is required. Contact Magna-Power support for further assistance.
