Magna-Power Sponsors Intern's Team at Formula Hybrid Racing Competition
Magna-Power Electronics, a high-technology electronics manufacturer in Flemington, NJ, sponsored the Rensselear Polytechnic Institute Formula Hybrid Racing team, which included Hunterdon County native and Magna-Power intern Szymon Morawski.
The Formula Hybrid Competition is an interdisciplinary design and engineering challenge for undergraduate and graduate university students. The students design and build a formula-style electric or plug-in hybrid racecar and compete in a series of events. This educational competition emphasizes drivetrain innovation and fuel efficiency in a high-performance application.
Szymon, currently completing his second summer as an intern at Magna-Power, works on new product development and improving the company’s information technology infrastructure. Szymon graduated from Hunterdon Central High School is 2012 and is pursuing a degree in Computer and Systems Engineering at Rensselear Polytechnic Institute with expected graduation in 2016. Szymon served as one of the electrical architects for his school’s Formula Hybrid team, integrating the various control systems over the automotive industry standard CAN bus interface.
Magna-Power provided the team with one of its 1U (1.75” high) SL Series high-power programmable DC power supply used for charging the hybrid vehicle battery pack between races. Battery charging and hybrid-electric powertrain development is a key application for Magna-Power products. The company’s products are used around the world by automotive manufacturers for validation of hybrid-electric components during production. With fully programmable control and power ranges from 1.5 kW to 2000 kW+, the power supplies provide the capability to emulate drivetrain profiles at power levels to satisfy the requirements of small hybrid cars to large electric commercial vehicles. Last year, Magna-Power completed the last phase of its 73,500 sq-ft vertically integrated manufacturing facility on Royal Road in Flemington, allowing the company to accommodate increased demand for its products and new developments.
